By constructing an interpolating polynomial that passes through these points, we can estimate the function’s values at other points within the interval. This is essential in various fields, such as engineering, physics, and computer science, where accurate function approximation is required for modeling and simulation purposes.
Chebyshev interpolation is a method used to approximate a function using Chebyshev polynomials. It is particularly useful when dealing with functions that have oscillatory behavior or when a high degree of accuracy is required.
The key idea behind Chebyshev interpolation is to choose interpolation points that are the roots of Chebyshev polynomials. These points are known as Chebyshev nodes and are distributed in a way that minimizes the error of the interpolation.

Chebyshev Polynomials
Chebyshev polynomials are a family of orthogonal polynomials that arise in various mathematical contexts, including approximation theory, numerical analysis, and signal processing. They are named after the Russian mathematician Pafnuty Chebyshev and are defined on the interval $[-1, 1]$. The Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind are denoted by $T_n(x)$ and are given by the recursive formula: \(T_0(x) = 1, \quad T_1(x) = x, \quad T_{n+1}(x) = 2xT_n(x) - T_{n-1}(x) \quad \text{for} \quad n \geq 1.\)
Chebyshev Nodes
Unlike Lagrangian interpolation, which uses equidistant nodes, Chebyshev interpolation employs Chebyshev nodes, which are the roots of the Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind. The Chebyshev nodes are defined as: \(x_k = \cos\left(\frac{2k-1}{2n}\pi\right) \quad \text{for} \quad k = 1, 2, \ldots, n.\)
Runge’s Phenomenon
One of the challenges in polynomial interpolation is Runge’s phenomenon, which refers to the oscillations that occur at the edges of the interval when using high-degree polynomials to approximate a function. This phenomenon can lead to large errors in the interpolation and is a common issue in numerical analysis.
However, this phenomenon can be mitigated by using Chebyshev nodes since they are distributed in a way that minimizes the error of the interpolation. By choosing the interpolation points wisely, we can achieve accurate approximations of functions without experiencing Runge’s phenomenon. This is one of the key advantages of Chebyshev interpolation over other methods.
My Project
In this project, I will explore Chebyshev interpolation and its applications in numerical analysis. I will implement the Chebyshev interpolation algorithm in Python and demonstrate its effectiveness in approximating functions with oscillatory behavior. By comparing the results of Chebyshev interpolation with other interpolation methods, I aim to showcase the advantages of using Chebyshev polynomials for accurate function approximation.
